Celebrate Black Teachers and Students
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
I teach at a Head Start through fifth-grade elementary school. Many of my students have never had the opportunity to play an instrument, much less learn how to write or compose music. I was able to have several music projects funded throughout the years that allowed me to extend my program in terms of strings, percussion, and recorders. Although most of my students are of Haitian-American heritage, we pride ourselves on being diverse as our teaching staff comes from many countries and ethnic backgrounds.
Since 2007, I have managed my music program using materials from DonorsChoose.org projects and purchasing out of pocket, but now help is once again needed to extend our music program.
Before DonorsChoose, I had been paying and renewing IXL for my students out-of-pocket and at no cost to my students.
My students have been utilizing, with marked results and improvement, the online learning and practice resource called IXL (I Excel) for the past ten or more years. This year, our school made it to a "B" school after 3 years of being a "C" school, and it is without a doubt that the IXL program helped.
All of my band students benefit from IXL's science, math, language arts, and writing components as they are assessed in writing at this grade level. IXL teaches them how to create strong sentences with correct sentence construction, how to avoid passive voice, and how to improve punctuation, and it also corrects grammar. The rules of standard English are strongly emphasized and taught which makes this online program highly effective.
